I'm playing on PC, and I'm thinking the short game length may be an overstatement. I suppose the real problem could be checkpoint placement, so that it's more like GTA:VC than GTAIV with death. I'm only up to Chapter 5, but if it's anything like Mafia I, the amount of driving is an exaggeration, or at most equal to GTA without the racing missions. I played the demo and aside from the horrible driving, at least on the PC, I really like it. My biggest issue is A) the amount of driving that seems to be an attempt to artifically increase playtime and B) the horrible save system.Īlso, I think RPG's should be closer to 20 Hours + in actual gameplay ESPECIALLY if there isn't any alt path decision making.

I'm not as concerned with the lack of SandBox.

My question would be, are you averse to paying more than $10 because it's an open world-ish game without all the usual crazy open world stuff, or do you just not pay more for a single-player only game that's not a 40 hour RPG? This sounds like a great 4th of July 2011 $10 Steam sale game. This is not the sandbox you are looking for. But in the end, just like Mafia I, it's not an open world game, it's a linear story-based shooter that's set in an open-ish world for believability. Even I got annoyed for a second when I couldn't play pool in a club, just because I had just accepted I would be able to. That said, it's still understandable, what with sandbox games suddenly all the rage these past two or three years that the sandbox expectations for Mafia II are even higher than when the original was compared to GTA III. The Physx effects (if you disable cloth effects on pedestrians so it's not a total hog) are subtle, but nice.Īnyone who loved the first will love this, no question. The only difference is lack of Euphoria physics (might actually have a lot to do with it) and that a day/night cycle that is scripted rather than happening constantly.

Textures are sharp, traffic and pedestrian density are both excellent. Hell, one completely inconsequential thing I noticed was that opposite direction traffic at night looked absolutely real to what glaring lights of traffic at night in real life looks like. The city feels very much alive, and none of it looks obviously copy and pasted like some neighborhoods in GTAIV. Well, I guess there'll be no new thread, oh well.Īnyway, it's exactly an upgraded version of the first with better shooting mechanics (except, no trenchcoat inventory mechanics and discarded ammo in magazines), better graphics, and ambiance & authenticity upped to the max.
